Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving, a holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the USA. Its origin is traced back to 1621, when in the city of Plymouth, Massachusetts, the Pilgrim Fathers gathered to thank the Lord for the good harvest.
In the 1960s, shopkeepers got into the habit of offering special discounts, to encourage shopping and kickstart the Christmas shopping.

The “Black” refers to the fact that at the time the bookkeepers’ accounting records were filled in with pen, using red ink for loss accounts, and black for positive accounts.
And needless to say, on the Friday after Thanksgiving, thanks to the promotions and the unmissable discounts that were offered, the accounts always ended up decidedly in the black, also because many took advantage of them – then as now – to buy Christmas gifts.
