The best Robot Vacuum Cleaners

How do robot vacuum cleaners work?

Robot vacuum cleaners are designed to clean the house with minimal help. Powered by a rechargeable battery, they can learn to orient themselves using sensors and cameras. A robot vacuum cleaner is generally able to dodge stairs, and is small enough to fit under low furniture.

After you have fully charged your robot vacuum, you should be able to get it started cleaning right away. It may take a few tries before your robot vacuum can correctly learn a room layout.

All but the most basic models can connect to your home network, and you can monitor them, and set the desired cleaning regime using the relevant app. The robot vacuum cleaner will then be able to install firmware updates (the software built into the vacuum cleaners) on its own, which typically eliminates bugs or includes new features.

Features of a robot vacuum cleaner to be aware of

Stair detection
This feature, now standard on almost all models, helps the robot sense when it has reached a ledge or step, so it can step back and avoid a harmful fall.

Virtual Wall
Used to create an invisible barrier, to block open doors or other areas you don’t want the robot to enter.

Programmable times
This handy feature will allow you to set the times of the day or week to operate the robot, for example you can set it to only work while you are at work.

Automatic recharge
When the battery charge is low, the robot vacuum will return to the charging base and automatically dock with it.

Execution time
Battery life is important, especially if you have a large area to clean. You will need a robotic vacuum cleaner that will clean long enough, before returning to the charging station.

Cleaning function
Some robot vacuums also have an internal cleaning function. Usually, this involves putting a small amount of water into a tank, which moistens a microfiber pad attached to the base of the vacuum cleaner.

Robot vacuum cleaner app
All robot vacuum cleaners, except the most basic, are enabled for home automation. They will connect to your wireless router and work with a dedicated app to help you control your cleaning schedule. While functionality varies depending on how sophisticated the robot is, you should have the ability to activate or pause the cleaning cycle, and schedule their preferred cleaning time and frequency. Other functions may include a map of where the robot has cleaned, cleaning log/history, manual cleaning, spot cleaning, battery status, or notifications of when the robot has finished its job.

Webcam
Some high-end robot vacuum cleaners have a camera. In this way you can turn the robot vacuum cleaner on or off, and monitor your home remotely.

Remote control
Most models are equipped with a remote control, to change settings or direct the vacuum cleaner into the room.

Is it worth having a robot vacuum cleaner?

Robot vacuums are great for cleaning, and can be used on a daily basis, especially when you’re out and about. We absolutely recommend them, and they can save you a lot of money. However, it should be remembered that – despite their autonomous nature – filters, dust containers and brushes will obviously need manual cleaning.
