The best Portable Projector, and the 10 best competitors
XGIMI is a brand that has won the prestigious Reddot and IF design awards several times. By market share, XGIMI is the undisputed leader in China in what has been identified as “the screenless TV market”. These devices try to differentiate themselves from traditional projectors through the numerous features they offer.
XGIMI MOGO Pro
XGIMI MOGO Pro is a compact projector with white and gray dominating the design; there are ventilation slots that hide a fan, three-sided speakers with a power socket, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI, an audio connector and an on/off button on the back. At the top is a light, a touch-sensitive volume key, and play/pause buttons. The rubber base hides a tripod screw, useful information and warnings. Despite its relatively modest size (146 x 106 x 95mm), it weighs a whopping 895g, something to keep in mind if you want to buy a tripod. The remote follows the same minimalist philosophy, with buttons requiring little explanation. It will be used to change the video source or to control the Google Assistant, for example. The XGIMI app that accompanies it is free.
The features of XGIMI MOGO Pro
At the heart of the MoGo Pro is a 0.23-inch DMD (Digital MicroMirror Display) chip. Like all DMDs, it is built by Texas Instruments and has a standard resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels (full HD). The luminance is 300 ANSI lumens, and the life of the lamp up to 30,000 hours.
An Amlogic T950X2 system-on-chip with a Mali-G31 GPU runs it all, aided by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. Connectivity takes place via Chromecast, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 802.11n, and the sound quality is guaranteed by Harman Kardon, owned by Samsung.
A 36Wh/10400mAh battery, powered by a 65W power adapter (19V, 3.42A), allows the projector to operate without cables.
The projector has a projection ratio of 1.2: 1, which means it will display a 76 inch to 200cm screen. It has a keystone correction of +/- 40 degrees on both axes. Noise has been minimized: XGIMI indicates less than 30 dB.
Note the absence of card readers which tend to be popular on the cheaper models. However, you can send any downloaded content via a USB drive, an adapter, or by connecting the player via the HDMI cable.
It’s hard not to fall in love with the MoGo Pro: XGIMI has confirmed that there won’t be a 4K version of this projector in the near future, as it would consume a lot more power and require a larger fan/system cooling.
As for the competitors, here are the 10 best portable projectors we have selected.
