Sinéad O’Connor’s true cause of death revealed
Sinéad O’Connor passed away on July 26, 2023, at the age of 56. On Tuesday, January 9, 2024, the Southwark Coroners Court officially confirmed that O’Connor died of natural causes. In a statement, they announced that the coroner had concluded their involvement in her death.
O’Connor gained widespread recognition for her rendition of Prince’s hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” earning nominations at the 1990 Grammys for Record of the Year, Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and Grammy Award for Best Music Video, Short Form.
Throughout her musical career, O’Connor faced both highs and lows. Notably, her performance of Bob Marley’s “War” on Saturday Night Live in 1992, where she protested against the Catholic Church by tearing a picture of Pope John Paul II, resulted in a permanent ban from the show. Despite criticism, she received praise for addressing important issues despite facing backlash.
Before her passing, O’Connor had announced her return to London and revealed that she was working on a new album set for release in 2024.
Following her death, various celebrities paid tribute to O’Connor in different ways. Pink and Brandi Carlile performed “Nothing Compares 2 U” together during Pink’s concert in Ohio in July. Russell Crowe shared a memory of encountering O’Connor at a pub in Ireland, while Bob Geldof informed fans that he had recently been in contact with O’Connor, describing her emotional state in the days leading up to her death.
Tragically, nearly a year before her own passing, O’Connor experienced the loss of her 17-year-old son, Shane, to suicide.
